So, you're feeling ready to outsource and invest in a stunning, brand-new website for your business? That's so exciting! You also want to ensure you get the best value for your money and come prepared? That's even better! As a website designer, I believe you've found the perfect place to learn how to maximize this exciting (and arguably one of your most crucial) business investment!
No need to worry; this will be quick and painless.
Know what you want your website to do.
Before you start focusing on the colors and layouts (though super fun!), it is important to get clear on your website's purpose. Are you selling products? Booking services? Building trust with potential clients? Before you hop on your first discovery call, it's super important to nail down what your website is all about. If you work with me, this is something we'll touch on during the preliminary questionnaire. It helps set the stage for everything else!
Come prepared with assets.
If you take one thing from this blog post, let it be this! Before we start the website design process, it is important to come armed with your branding (logos, colors, fonts, etc.), copywriting (headings, product info, about section, services, etc.), and photography (headshots, lifestyle or product images). It is a common misconception that the website designer you hire will find, create or write all the assets your website requires at the cost they quoted. If your website designer provides copywriting, brand design, or photography, these services will probably be part of a separate package with an extra fee. (P.S. I offer both branding and website design. We love a one-stop-shop!) But just know that gathering your assets will always have to be handled before (any good, strategic) website design can take place. This will ensure that your designer brings your vision together faster and more efficiently.
Communication is key.
Design is a collaborative process. Expect to share feedback, answer questions and be involved along the way. And not only should you be responsive, it should be done in a timely manner. Don't leave your designer hanging. If they're anything like me they're going to be eagerly awaiting your response so they can keep designing away on your website! You don't need to have all the answers - but being responsive and open helps your designer create a website that feels exactly like your business.
Hiring a website designer is an exciting step for your business! But, it is also an investment of your time, energy and trust. Coming into the process prepared and with the right mindset will make all the difference in how your website turns out (and how it feels to launch it.) A little prep now sets you up for a website that actually works for you - one that helps you grow, book, sell or simply show up in a more aligned way.
